El Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV, género Tospovirus, familia Bunyaviridae) se transmite por trips de manera persistente y se encuentra distribuido alrededor del mundo causando graves pérdidas económicas en diversos cultivos. El TSWV tiene genoma tripartita de ARN con las siguientes características principales: el segmento largo (L) es de polaridad negativa y codifica para la polimerasa RNA dependiente (RdRP); el segmento mediano (M) codifica las glicoproteínas Gn y Gc que forman parte de la cápside y NSm involucrada en el movimiento viral; y el segmento pequeño (S) codifica las nucleoproteínas NSs implicadas en la actividad supresora del silenciamiento genético. Correlations between symptoms and DAS - Elisa values in two sources of resistance against tomato spotted wilt virus BJM

The commercial tomato, Lycopersicon esculentum, cultivars Ângela Gigante I-5100 and Santa Clara (tospovirus susceptible), the Stevens cultivar, lines and experimental hybrids (tospovirus resistant), were used: a) to evaluate two sources of resistance to tospoviruses in tomato (one from L. esculentum/Rey de Los Tempranos, and another one from L. peruvianum/Stevens); and b) to verify statistically significant correlation between virus concentration determined through DAS-ELISA and symptomatology. Detection and partial characterization of an isolate of Groundnut ringspot virus in Solanum sessiliflorum Trop. Plant Pathol.

The cubiu (Solanum sessiliflorum) fruit, originating in the Amazon basin, is commonly used in that region for food, medicine, and cosmetics. In an experimental culture of cubiu, in order to evaluate its adaptation to conditions in the Northern region of the state of Rio de Janeiro, it was observed plants with mosaic symptoms. A cubiu plant was collected and analyzed to identify the etiological agent. After mechanical passage through a local lesion host, a host range test was performed. The virus induced chlorotic local lesions in Chenopodium quinoa, necrotic local lesions in Gomphrena globosa, mosaic in S. sessiliflorum, leaf and stem necrosis in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) 'Rutgers', mosaic and leaf distortion in Datura stramonium and Physalis...

Identificação e quantificação dos componentes de perdas de produção do tomateiro Horticultura Brasileira

Foram identificados e quantificados, no período de verão-outono, evidenciando o componente crítico e o fator-chave de perdas da cultura, mediante a utilização da tabela de vida das culturas. O trabalho foi realizado na Horta de Pesquisa da UFV, de janeiro a junho de 2001, sob delineamento de blocos casualizados, com dois tratamentos (cultivar Santa Clara I 5300 e híbrido Débora Plus) e cinco repetições. Durante o ciclo da cultura, foram avaliados o número de plantas mortas e as causas de morte, o número de flores e frutos/planta. Nas colheitas, os frutos sadios foram contados, pesados e classificados, sendo identificadas as causas de perda dos frutos danificados. Phylogenetic analysis of Groundnut ringspot virus isolates from peanut and identification of potential thrips vectors in peanut crop in Argentina Agriscientia (Córdoba)

Groundnut ringspot virus (GRSV), genus Tospovirus, is a thrips-transmitted virus infecting peanuts (Arachis hypogaea L.) in Córdoba province, Argentina. Fourteen viral isolates were recovered from Tospovirus-like symptomatic plants from different peanut fields. Viral isolates as GRSV were identified by serological and molecular tests. Nucleotide and derived amino acid sequence analyses of the nucleocapsid (N) gene indicated a high degree of identity between the GRSV peanut isolates, indicating that there is no molecular variability in the N gene of the GRSV that infects peanuts in the cropping area of Córdoba. Abstract Frankliniella zucchini transmits zucchini lethal chlorosis virus, causal agent of lethal chlorosis of zucchini squash. The characteristics of relationship between this virus with its vector have not been studied, one of the reasons being the lack of a method for rearing the thrips for laboratory studies. This work proposes a system for the rearing of F. zucchini on fresh virus free zucchini ‘Caserta’ fruits, offering a practical and efficient alternative for the supply of a large number of insects for later study of virus/vector relationship. In addition, to aid in the identification of this species of thrips, the immature and adult forms obtained from the colony were described.

Serological Identification of Virus in Watermelon Production Fields in the Tocantins State BABT

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) cultivated in almost all tropical and subtropical regions of the world, has its largest output in China, and then, according to FAO data, Turkey, Iran and Brazil, being one of the main crops cultivated in State of Tocantins, Brazil. In this work was investigated the occurrence and distribution of the watermelon viruses, totaling 752 samples taken in a stratified experimental design in four representative regions of production: Gurupi (150), Lagoa da Confusao (232), Formoso do Araguaia (265) and Porto Nacional (105). Tomato chlorotic spot virus in hydroponically-grown lettuce in São Paulo State, Brazil Trop. Plant Pathol.

In the regions of Campinas and Sumaré, São Paulo, Brazil, hidroponically grown crops of Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) cv. Verônica, which showed virus-like symptoms were examined by electron microscope, biological, serological and molecular tests. Pleomorphic, enveloped particles (80-100 nm in diameter) were always detected in these samples. Experimentally inoculated host plants, including lettuce, reacted with tospoviruses-induced symptoms. Some differences were observed in Gomphrena globosa, which reacted by showing local lesions and systemic mosaic.
